Even at 35, I love to learn, one of the ways I learn is to listen to small business educational podcasts. They have some great advice, and it seems like something I always hear about is how you have to niche down your brand in order to be successful. This is something I've always struggled with.
I've always had many passions and when I love something, I kind of become obsessed with it. Years ago, I blogged with my friend about books. I started off mostly reviewing books but after a few years, I wanted to blog about some of my other interests and hobbies. Some of the other things I wanted to blog about was fashion, makeup, and just life in general. I was worried about alienating the readers that followed our blog so I ended up creating a totally separate blog to talk about those things.
Needless to say, it was a lot of unnecessary work to run and maintain two blogs, not to mention the double price of domains and themes and monthly hosting. After a few years, it became very draining to run and come up with content for two separate blogs which led to me eventually quitting blogging all together. After I quit blogging, I ended up realizing that about 90% of the people that would comment and visit my non-book blog were readers from my book blog. I was just creating double the work for myself.
While I know that there is some truth to the whole 'you have to find your niche' thing, I do think that you CAN have more than one interests. I've struggled a lot with my social media accounts for this business because I'm not very good at focusing on just my small business. I love to use my digital planner, I love to read and listen to audiobooks, I'm obsessed with Disney and Disneyland, I looove making and drinking tea, I love to go camping and spending time in the mountains, I love going on walks, I love trees. When it comes to crafting, I love vinyl, sublimation, I like making cups, mugs, tumblers, and I wanna start adding embroidery and maybe screen printing to the shop later this year. All these things are a part of what makes me who I am and I wanna talk about those things on my blog and on my social media. Just like how I follow a variety of social media accounts, I hope that you guys enjoy some of my other non-shop related content.
What are some of your other interests? Do you niche down in your business? Do you post about other things besides business on your social media?
